Never having been to war;
my body, only foe,
lends not a feather to
those who’ve fought and know.

So easily do I in health,
cede a sickened me away,
as if all I am must remain
in wealth the same to stay.

How frantic do I tear a cloying sheet
from my sleeping breathing mouth,
mind scrambling fast beyond command
my hand claws the sheet without.

So when that demented news arrives,
when my body seeks to spirit me,
how desperate carry will I the fight
which loss in time I know will be. [comments] => 5 [counter] => 123 [topic] => 61 [informant] => invierno [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => selfstruggles )

We neednt have been to war to look death in the face and question our purpose for existing. Our necessity raises itself to question when we retire. While it is unburdening, it is also devaluing.
Your poem questions the determination to survive, and that hinges on our sense of self esteem and our worth to others.
You raise an interesting question - is our life worth living? And as you conclude, the evidence will be measured by the extent to which we battle to survive.

As we grow older the time will come when our health starts to fall off and our bodies and mind must fight the war to regain a healthy mind body and soul and there will be times we question the worth of it all
Good flow Interesting topic.....

we feel we all have breathing in common,
when thoughts of war appear and perhaps
from a safe place it holds, how fragile we
might be regarding the soul of all people who
allow wars to go on, even though the wars that
do exist,
are not of our own making.
Freedoms take their toll, our own lack of not seeing
into the future, this omnipresence, we sometimes
fail to achieve.
You are not old until you feel age. You don/'/t see enough
about yesterday until one day you face today, and
when you become today seems more like now.
It/'/s unretrievable what has been lost / it will never
ever come back - is that the wisdom then?
No. I say it is only the blow that confronts you
firsthand and in the now.
You deal with it or it deals with you.

Peace!

I/'/m with Jaye and UU on this.
Very well thought out and written.
In my situation I always look at dying in your sleep a blessing to avoid all of the nonsense and struggle.

I/'/ve been there several times and that is my conclusion. There is no quality of life if you have to be artificially kept alive. I loved the last stanza!

We do tend to be our own worst enemy. Our soul
has the ability to live forever which I guess could
make our mind and body envious wearing themselves
out quicker in the process of finding greater longevity.
Truth be told as you clearly stated is that longevity is
only short lived and death is and always will be
inevitable.

Great piece of writing my friend.
