I still have the fire for writing, just not always the time!!! [bodytext] => Last night I spent the evening in the company of Mr Alcohol
Some of you may know him a little better than I
Others may never have met him, mistrusting his reputation
With a little respect he will treat you fair, if you just obey the rules

Should I ever need to call on him I know where he is to be found
At any social gathering he is the first to be invited
Though he never says a single word and always remains so cold
He breaks down all the barriers, this ambassador I call a friend

To share his life every single day I think would be too much
Like anyone you will ever meet he also has his flaws
But I’m happy he is my interpreter in dim lit, smoke filled rooms
Through him the language of nonsensical still makes the perfect sense

Last orders please, the barman yells, as the minutes tick tock down
My friends and I smile wearily and look towards the door
A shake of the head, a laugh, a joke as we bid a fond farewell
Contented by Mr Alcohol who already slipped away. Smiles....Great writing and very insightful and much reality too.

Reminds me of my youth when a guy we all know drinks too much. The hostess was milking him for tips all night for which made me mad. Last call came and he was smashed with his head laying on the table. The waitress pulls his head up by his hair and asked if he wanted anything and he responded " six more white Russians "
And she let go of his hair and his face crashes back on the table. Sad....

Thanks for the memories and great write.

I think you captured the personification of your subject quite
perfectly here. I adore this line,

//He breaks down all the barriers, this ambassador I call a friend //

Very relatable to more than a few, I should think. Nicely done Steve.

An enjoyable read.

Oh boy, did I have some run-ins with Mr.Alcohol. And I remember (though sometimes I couldn/'/t remember) his favourite phrase was ....... one more, go on, just one more!
Funny how all the bad jokes were so laughable when he was around.

A fine rendition - thanks for the nostalgia.

A poem for everyone! We have been with or around Mr. Alcohol at one time or another. He blurs the sharp edges of the boundaries we encounter, so crossing is less intimidating.
We can play the fool, throw up in our shoes, and blame the whole fiasco on alcohol. A good time Charlie in a bottle! By the comments I see you have called forth memories. A fine tale, well written, that takes us all back. Cheers.

Clever write!
He does get around, doesn`t he? Seems to know most everyone. Still, most of us can only take so much of him.

Met him. He/'/s bad company. Cunning, baffling, powerful. Run.

Man, what a great poem. I spent to many evenings with the fellow, and I surely paid the price. I really dig the soft references to danger, and I recall well the smoke filled bars and how complete b.s. made sense. I/'/ve been sober over four years now, and can say my life is infinitely better since I left Mr. Alcohol behind. Thanks for a tremendous share.

Oy, I have met him, and he rear-ended me for 40 years. I finally bid him adieu. Life is far superior without his fetid company.

I HAD to read this. If you/'/ve traveled back to my earlier submissions here from 2015 or so, you/'/ll see quite a few poems with your pal as the subject of contention.

I liked this a lot man.

This poem gave me a huge smile! I love it! I am not friends with Mr Alcohol but I know people who are. Your evening with him seems so accurate. Excellent write!
