You can’t have both my dear.

Youve turned a boy into a man;
You cannot turn him back.
He’s climbed your hill and learned to kill;
You can’t give Jill her Jack.

You should have known he would have grown;
Much wiser than you wanted.
Sleep well tonight, you’ve won the fight;
And left our graveyards haunted.

Old enough to fight your war;
Too young to buy a beer.
No matter what you battle for;
You can’t have both my dear.

He’s climbed your hill and learned to kill;
You can’t give Jill her Jack.

And left our graveyards haunted.

you hit the nail on the head with this one.
I dont think that many outside the ranks fully
understand the contradiction that you have so
brilliantly captured here.
"OLD ENOUGH TO FIGHT YOUR WAR;
TOO YOUNG TO BUY A BEER."

"YOUVE TURNED A BOY INTO A MAN;
YOU CANNOT TURN HIM BACK."

I know first hand the truth here.

Damn straight.
To the government you are expendable.

the mandibles
the first thing you learn
in the armed forces
it is about war, killing
waiting in line

Donald Rumsfeld said,
you go to war with what you got,
but they refused to increase taxes
during that war, they refused
reinstate the draft board

you go to war with what you have,
and then you let seven or eight
billion in cash disappear
And you create chaos
A myriad of chaos

And ordinary people server
several terms of combat
because you go to war
with what you got

and the names of the fallen
are projected upon your television screen
at the end of the
PBS News Hour/

Peace!
