i'm thirty now
and you'll always be twenty-two
and i'll always be the woman
who broke your heart-
repeatedly,
calling you at 2 am because
of my neurotic tendencies
or recurring fears.
you were never smart enough
to ignore the phone,
to go back to sleep
and leave me to my nightmares,
my sad songs i rewrite
every night.
you know i never answered when
you needed me,
always some pathetic excuse (lie)
i always lied to you
sometimes i wish you would
have lied to me
just to make it fair.
