It prolly could have been put under a few topics, but I figured the "poetry that tells a story" topic was most fitting. [bodytext] => Driving home in the dark, late after work
Thoughts whirling dizzily through my head
Replaying the hectic pace of the job
And the words which were mistakenly said

I park my car in the driveway
Glance longingly towards the barn
Into the house I go to change my clothes
Knowing he's in his stall, safe and warm

I pace back and forth in the kitchen
Like an animal trapped in a cage
Replaying in my head, the scene at work
Misery battles with rage

I throw on a coat and go out in the cold
Unaware of the beauty of my surrounding
He hears me coming through the silence of the snow
And a wicker he starts sounding

Stepping into his world, I'm infused with warmth
He bobs his great head in a greeting
Calm settles over me, my heart beat slows
Ugly thoughts are now but fleeting

Horse lips touch my cheek, warm and fuzzy
I chuckle at his equine caress
He brings me up from my bottomless pit
By doing what a friend does best

He accepts the bridle, but won't take the saddle
Being kind of stubborn tonight
I brush him down and pat his shoulder
And softly whisper "That's all right"

It's out of the barn and into the night
Small woman leads giant horse
I stand on a log, then mount him bareback
Once I'm up, I'm stunned with great force

Without misery or rage chewing me apart
My vision is clear, I can see
The beauty of this night is astounding
I've come back to reality

The silence of the night surrounds us
Moonlight dancing on new fallen snow
Black, white and variegated shades of gray
Two stars in this silent picture show

With a squeeze of my legs, he steps out
On his back, I'm eight feet tall
As we walk away from my worries
My problems become quite small

We take the path often traveled
How different it looks in the night
White moon glow woven with stark black tree tops
Gray shadows don't inspire fright

Air cold enough to burn your nose
But it's crisp, clean and sweet
I'm shedding worries like a heavy coat
And rocking to the rhythm of his feet

Vapor plumes from his muzzle like dragons breath
Tiny ice balls form on his face
It's a frozen Hell we are visiting
But we both want to be in this place

Far up ahead in the distance
A mournful cry is heard
A lone coyote throws his head to the sky
And speaks his lupine word

The closer we get, the more he howls
He's angry at this intrusion
My earlier belief that we were alone in this world
Was nothing but an illusion

Turning around, we retrace our steps
Back to the barn's welcoming heat
A winters evening midnight ride
Has been a welcomed treat

Safely tucked in his stall and munching hay
He occasionally bumps me with his head
While I brush him down and speak to him softly
I realize that for tonight, rage and misery are dead. Excellent write. Although I'm not much into horses, this poem truly shows the friendship and peace you obviously get from yours. I'm really enjoying your poetry .... Jan

You have strong final lines, and rhyme like a master wordsmith. Another great poem.
