Sky-scrapers of files waiting to be shoved away,
Papers raining from the sky, pooling around my feet,
Up to my neck with phone calls and duties unmet…
Searching desperately for an escape…

Reveries of a place, millions of miles away from here,
Day is night, night is day,
Eyes no longer a honey hue,
Red cracks of sleepless nights adorning them,
My mind is an over-fried mass of pink density,
Surprised to find there are still words inside…

Help me stay awake, I’m falling,
Coffee stains running all along my mind,
Residues of adrenaline lost in the eternal,
Voices rise from their slumber,
And begin their insufferable prayers,
Of lost dreams and unfinished symphonies…

Insomnia dressed as that golden-haired illusion of mine,
With its bittersweet hymns of love and destiny,
Depriving me of rest, yet, I can’t help but be grateful…
And listen and weep and sigh,
At every note it sings…

Blissful sorrow caressing my heart,
I closed my eyes for an eternity,
Returned to my world of ethereal joys and fantasy,
But only for a moment,
Only for one fleeting lapse of time…
I can never be completely free,
From this tedious prison of life and occupation…

Floating off to a dream world,
Loving the kisses of the sun, so warm and comforting,
Like an embrace from an old friend…
My body’s been long since forgotten,
Incorporeal flights of fancy,
All trapped within the corners of my fevered mind…

I open my eyes once more,
Tears of frustration and recklessness trailing down,
Humid tracks of past rains,
No sunshine, no endless beach and sand,
Just these four white walls, a depthless sea of files and papers,
Remnants of my reverie abandoned in some other realm,
Beyond these prison fortifications…

I’m still here…

I know of few who could not relate to this Stephy ... the lament of the working multitudes. Sure makes one wish for childhood again sometimes ... Beware ... dear Steph ... too much coffee and you start to hear voices ... or end up like a few of the others of us here ... touched !!! LOL

( may your files remain coffee free and coffee free from files )

A poem of truth and honesty, of having a bad day, and getting through it, even though it is hard and rough going, you got through it, It was a good poem, thanks for sharing it, and allowing me to read it and enjoy it,
Tammi

I loved the imagery in these words. They played a symphony of many endless hours of toiling with the files behind coffee laden sheets of tears! Excellent portrayal. May you find the rest and dreams of the sweet ethereal life. Angel always...godspeed...joni

Wow what an intense write of your dislike for
your work. I sincerely hope it gets better and I
am sure it will. In the meantime I will feel
sorry for the pens and paper that bare the
brunt of your frustration although the paper
doubtless feels honoured to hold such
beautiful lines. Once again, loved the poem.
