By Jim Hellekson

There once was a man who lived life large and believed he couldn’t be beat.
Who danced with the moon the stars and the sun and asked the heavens bow at his feet
A man who took life for granted and believed “friends” would always be there
And forsook the ones he loved without a second glance or care.

He lived this way for many years, believing his ideas were right
And laughed at those who said he was wrong, casting them from his sight
But chance is always certain and every sun is destined to set
And sitting alone on night he realized that he was now paying his debt.

The price of ignorance and the fees of a fool
A debt somebody so empty is unable to pool
And there he sat all night, praying the stars show him the kindness of old
Alone and empty, with just the stars and the terrible bitter cold

The chill only an empty soul can feel, when all light is lost
When nothing but fear and anger are left, and all coated with frost
The night drug on and sleep was not a welcome guest
And believing this was the end, he closed his eyes and accepted his failed test

When to his surprise a strange warmth grew and filled his empty chest
And as he opened his eyes he watched the sun rise, and realized his debt was put to rest
This man was given a second chance to right the wrongs of a foolish life
And he did just that, filling his life with love instead of empty strife

We all must face the cold and dark that comes with every night
But being alone is so much worse than any darkness we may fight
And as for forsaking love? That poor man grew wise.
And realized that someone who cares, this Earth has no greater prize.

"The price of ignorance"

Quite ironic that you should post this poem here without any recourse to us who bother contributing to your appreciation.

I suggest you either begin commenting, or stop posting altogether, Jim.
