A New Years Wish

Grandpa, tell me a story
Of an older day
A time before prosperity
Got in the way
When things were simple
And people were free
To be the person
They wanted to be

When a hard days work
Brought a honest days pay
When the independent owner
Still had a say
Long before greed and scandals
Took center stage
When the hard-working man
Still made a decent wage

Grandpa, paint me a picture
Of our world today
That isn’t filled
With corruption and decay
Make me believe
In a world that’s new
Give me a reason
To believe it could be true

Grandpa, I know this request
Seems large at hand
But I pray for a nation
In which to stand
Your eyes has seen it
So long ago
And I know you’d like to see it again
Before you go

Will you hold my hand?
And pray out loud
With both our eyes closed
And our heads bowed
That God will once again
Bless this land
And prevent moral destruction
From getting out of hand

Wow! you always paint brilliant pictures with your pen. Here you have done it again, the anguished plea resonates within my soul, I too often cry out for an era long gone, but alas!
Still I believe the generation coming through will change this, hope springs eternal.
Once again thanks for your refreshing write.

I am so glad that I discovered your poetry!
This took me to so many places---to asking my grandfather for stories of his childhood and realizing that saying "no" to my own children is often better for them than saying "yes." Thank you for sharing!
