I saw it happen from my bedroom window
It was the talk of the town for many witnessed it as well
How vividly we remembered her screams and cries

It was cold that day as it would not stop raining
The gunshot rang out like thunder and she crashed like lightening
She quivered on the cold street and gasped for air
She was alive but it wasn't going to last

She bled all over the sidewalk for several hours
It was an inconvenience to walk by her mess
I stepped in a poodle of her blood on my way to work
How angry I was that I had to buy a new pair

The newspaper arrived outside my door this morning
They said if she had help in time she might have pulled through
The report said that the police had no witnesses and that no calls were ever made
"A shame" I thought as I put the paper down and left for work [comments] => 2 [counter] => 176 [topic] => 46 [informant] => subgenius [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => didactic )

Poodles aside, I can relate with the sentiments here. Most people just don't want to know about others' pain, and in the herd mentality, it takes someone very special to break from the impulse of repulsion.

Good write.

i love the distance... such a good write, and i love the imagery, the way you talk about stepping in the blood and being upset because you had to buy new shoes... love it!
