[bodytext] => So softly comes a voice upon the breeze, And here upon my eyes I have gone blind. I have not seen the forest for the trees, Though memories I have within my mind. But will I pray upon my bended knee? Or will I try a mortal way to find, Find all these things once coveted as real. I’d trade them, ev’ry one, to break this seal. I was a foolish man I know this well, But foolishness should not condemn a life. I took a lot, of which I just can’t tell, And those who fought the end they felt my knife. So for this I’ve been banished to this cell, And on the morning dawn will end my strife. But what am I to do with what I’ve done? And will I find the answer ‘fore the sun? Now dawn is creeping close I’ve not much time, I hear that death is knocking at my door. Repentance is to me a calloused rhyme, For God has not an ear for me to bore. The priest he came and asked me of my crime, And by my words he saw my blackened core. But even though my crimes are black as night, He took my hand and showed me t’ward the light. For in our hearts he said God’s always there, We just sometimes refuse to see the signs. And as the guards began to shave my hair, I strained within my soul to pay my fines. I prayed to Him and hate began to tear, So on and on I did recite those lines. And when the time it came for me to die, I knew forgiveness through Him was no lie. © 2004 Michael David Morash All rights reserved [comments] => 1 [counter] => 161 [topic] => 11 [informant] => mdmorash [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => ChristianPoetry )
