[bodytext] => The Belfry of Hallein rings hourly, Its soothing clang draws inward mind and ear, Each quarter-hour stroke advises me, That time does pass like any fleet courier. Bright gorgeous summer flowers in full bloom, beneath my window breathe and cast their spell, Intoxicating scent pervades my room That love prepared for visitors to dwell. The rushing brook below holds mysteries, It lisps and murmurs of the things once were, It stirs with gentleness sweet memories, And brings to mind events without compare!. There is just beauty and great quietness, The nights are magical, the days are bright Down in the garden, plants salubrious, Are shimmering bedewed in starry light. Three times full twenty-six strokes rings this chime, On every morn at six, throughout the year That echo ‘long the broad stretched chains alpine And mansion of my brother,- Karli dear. Oh!- I could weep, OR shed some furtive tear For all the many that are dispossessed, Deprived, debarred these wondrous chimes to hear, T’would seem to me they miss of life the best. This ringing, echoing through the chains alpine, That swift rebounds as does the boomerang, Does lift the mind on high to things divine With their persistent, faithful hourly clang. Count seventy eight chime strokes,- so clearly heard, Do count with fingers like the sacristan, As they ring out to glorify the Lord; Stroke Seventy-Eight - the last- counts for A M E N 1 Bells of Hallein,- ring on forever more, Do never stop your chiming dear bells please! Transport your ringing to this far-off shore, To bring me comfort sweet from overseas. © Elizabeth Dandy Author's Note: The bells and chimes in the belfry of Halleim sound 3 times each 26 bell strokes at a time every day in the morning at six o'clock. Altogether 78 bell strokes/ They also ring quarter, half, three quarter and full hour. They ring differently when calling for regular services Hallein is famous for its salt mines and also for the shrine, - Duerrnberg, - which is at the very mountain top, and is built directly from the local marbel, drawn on-site from the mountain on which the Duerrnberg shrine stands. The Shrine draws daily pilgrims to its center, the carved image of the Blessed Virgin. There is an abundance of brine from the salt mines that has been preserved for the curative salt-water although the salt mines are no longer in operation.
