Stiff and blue from chill.
Your pointed face is too pale,
But your spirit fights on still.

This winters night is frosty,
Too cold for a child.
But better out here than at home,
Where the arguments are wild.

You suck back the sobs that threaten,
And battle back the pain inside.
You reach up numbing hands,
And check to see if the cut is wide.

You know she didn't mean it,
She just didn't see you there.
She was annoyed, lashed out is all,
It's not like she doesn't care.

He just makes her mad is all,
But he shouldn't take all the blame.
It's not his fault he likes a drink,
And he did feel some shame.

You touch the bruising on your eye,
And wince as you blink.
You shouldn't have been in his way like that,
You just didn't think.

You wait on the frosty streets,
For what, you don't know.
Maybe a miracle, maybe it's death,
Maybe for a caring someone to show.

The streetlights flicker as you sink back,
Pushing yourself against the wall.
Your arms wrapped round to protect,
You feel like you're heading for a fall.

The tears that are pushing up inside,
Threaten to overflow.
You hold your breath and suck them back,
But at your eye corners, they start to show.

It stings as they start to slide down,
Seeming to you like the final straw.
You lift up your head and start to scream,
Loud wails that leave your throat raw.

You scream and scream until you are spent,
The echoes of your cries pound the air.
And you see people walk on by,
Heads held high, without a care.

You gasp, unable to believe the cold,
Not one asks if you're okay.
You stumble to get up, wiping the tears,
And start to run, your feet like clay.

You reach the door, pound it hard,
Look up into her worried eyes.
You're picked up without a word,
And hugged as she cries.

You see his face from over her shoulder,
Drawn and tired from lack of sleep.
Arms stretched wide, he encircles you both,
And the relief you feel is way too deep.

When they're not angry, you rejoice,
There might not be more fighting tonight.
And you cuddle closer, hope aglow,
And hope against hope that you are right.

You're an ancient child with old old eyes,
Painful to look at on a child of four.
You've seen it all and know it all,
But still you walk through that hope labelled door. I read that a few times and each time it just struck at me, all the emotion and sadness and pain that the child had to go through and yet he still retains some optimism in the end...I'm just speechless for words.
