I can tell they see
More of a man
Than I think I am.

They see an open dictionary
Stocked with words they`ve never heard,
They see a house doctor
Tending illnesses until they`ve cured.

They see the strength of superman
Without the cape and costume,
They see a masterful magician
Making toys vanish inside their room.

One day they will grow to see me
As just a man, less than a hero,
A man with flaws and failures,
Not as sharp as an arrow.

A man they did not see
When they were my little ones;
But a man that was bigger than I was
In the eyes of my sons.

The blessing of children and grandchildren is that we have to live up to their expectations. They make us better than we ever would have been. They are great teachers because we have to know the answer to WHY.
When they leave home, they learn what. being a grown up is all about, and trust me, once again, you will be the hero.
Life cycles, but love ties it all together.
You have expressed the concerns of many young fathers and mothers. We truly lose them to knowledge, but the bridge runs in both directions and they will be back if only briefly.

The veneration goes with the naivety of innocence but perhaps we drop too far a level. I think we underestimate the hardship entailed in parenting and the forced uprightness endured in order not to be a hypocrite when we try to instil morals in them
