Array ( [sid] => 175758 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Dementia [time] => 2013-04-16 19:20:43 [hometext] => Comments appreciated, I had the honor of speaking to an elderly man who shared a story with me about dementia and his wife. I was blessed to hear this story and let him read the poem that he inspired. He said it may be sad, but he loved it. [bodytext] =>
As she forgets my face of many years
I watch the one I love whither away.
Memories that were cherished, now lost
A hateful disease, her mind slowly decays

Doctors bring life to the struggle
And the changes my love will go through
But no warning will truly suffice
As this hateful disease grew

At first she wondered around
Forgetting were she had been.
Then the memory of me was erased
And my name was now of other men

Forced to stand by and watch
And remember the love that we shared.
While her cries filled the night.
And In her eyes, a strangers glare

But she has changed my life for the better
And I have known her since I was seven
Now my time is coming near
And await to meet her again in heaven

Untill that day comes
I stand by the side of my wife
From death do us part
I will love her till the end of my life

Beautiful and well thought out write.
In my family, it was the other way around - my father had dementia and had to be in a nursing home for a few years. He eventually didn't recognize most of us - but he knew his military rank when someone called him by that! So sad.
Thanks for posting. Blessings, SF

If it weren't for the misspellings I'd say you nailed it. Good poem.

Thanks,

Tim
