I peer through sad and reddened eyes
and see that you are lost and cold
and oh so quickly growing old
I feel your fright and disbelief
your rage and overwhelming grief
o’er “should have dones” and “might have beens”
and burden of a thousand sins.

I too share in your deep regret
I too am lost and cold and yet
I wonder what I might have changed
What deeds I might have rearranged
to not have caused this life to fail
To not have doubt and tears assail
What truths that I mistook for lies...

But hindsight sees with perfect eyes

And so I stand with steady gaze
and wish for warm and peaceful days
Yet peace is but the stuff of dreams
The last request of fools it seems
which stark reality dispels
before the harsh onslaught of Hell
Yet I fear not Hells’ bitter kiss
it cannot be much worse than this.

metaphorical, lyrical, sad and wistful. Regrets, I've had a few...

Today I spied this line (or something close to it) on a new art gallery down the road:

the purpose of a man's life is to create beautiful things

...judging by this poem, you're doing alright, Larry.

This describes very well my state of mind at times. The feeling of despair is very well conveyed.
