In the middle of the night.

This has never happened before.
What could have gotten them so restless?

I don't want to look.
I'm scared of what I may see,
Of what I may not see,
Of what might suddenly pop out on me.

So I wait,
Cowering in my bed.

I can hear my heart
Loud and clear
Against my ear,
With the help of the pillow I rested my head on,
The cotton making it seem
Even louder.

I count the heartbeats.
One, two, three...

The dogs keep barking,
Restless and alarmed.

I start to wonder if I closed my curtain tight...

I'm starting to panic.
Four, five, six...

I pray to God that nothing serious happens,
That everything will be alright.

I can't close my eyes.
Seven, eight, nine...

A yelp,
Coming one by one.

My heart jumps in my throat,
And I suddenly fear for the dogs.

What could have happened to them?
What will happen to me?
I hear my window slowly slide open.
I was so sure I had closed the latch...

I start to cry, to shed a tear.
...Ten.

I am awake long enough to catch the splattering of blood on the walls.
