The Last Long Goodbye
The old chevy with the loose rod,
bought with the last of his soul,
Reached the Wyoming rattlesnakes
Where it finally died of a broken heart
Leaving him the footsteps in the dust
Walking into the California sun
With little heart and less hope
He just did not give a damn
Eating bile and beans in the jungle,
he lived on odd job nickels, Mogen David dimes
And flower children love
When he found the sea
He found his dream.
If he could walk westward
past the tide pools and rocks,
The Pacific would cleanse him
of the past that hung about his eyes.
There would be no one
To read the poetry full of sand
Bleeding in the surf;
He had finally found his welcoming arms
