The sandstorm is made of memories;
Each grain of sand a moment in time
Frozen in my mind. Here the lies
Cloud my judgement so the rhyme
And reason for my desperation dies
Within the swirling grains of history.

A speck of sand enters my eye;
Sweet irony that the means by which I see
Is blinded by a static tableau of memory.
From the invader comes a picture of me
With you in a meadow – upon our faces glee.
What sorcery would punish me so?

I rub my eyes and like a sentient camera
Another image replaces the first. Excitation
Replaces the hesitancy and helplessness.
This time we are there in church, the celebration
Of our union. I see you in that wedding dress
And the vision becomes too much to bear.

Past wonderment is tinged with the sadness of foresight.
I know how this story must end.
Tears remove the photographic obstruction
But is instantly replaced and I ascend
The stairs of memory past our union
To the time when the final denouement plays.

Here I arrive at the top step of yesterday’s end.
You lay before me with him at your side
And I have to wonder why I am cursed
To gaze upon those beauteous eyes open wide.
Your countenance is fair and seems blessed
As you unwittingly drive a dagger through my heart.
