Your rapid blinking away of tears,
Like the pulsing of a solitary star, is the heartbeat of my regret.
It's been a long time you say, twenty years in fact,
When we buried our father.
I watch you at the graveside, your body stiff with grief,
The unkindness of the years on open display.
You turn away and our eyes meet
And in that one moment I see a dark shadow crossing
The full moon of your soul.
I wonder then what you are thinking,
Do you wish it was me down there and not him?
We inspect the wreaths and flowers and I try to ignore
His sons as they stand weeping
At the gaping wound of his grave.
Afterwards we dissect the years, make our excuses,
We part again, the unspoken words stretching between us
Like a vast dry desert.
And we promise each other not to leave it another twenty years.

Such a long time comes down to that. I hope it's not another twenty years. May that talent within you be unleashed again soon of writing with such emotion.

Going through the motions whilst hiding the deepest emotions,facing what isn't there for all our best intentioned promises,leaving thoughts wishes and pondering to weave their way through the hard cold facts and life goes on. A very difficult write communicated from the heart with warmth and sensitivity.

This is a powerful write that instantly triggered an emotional response in me (I have just buried a family member myself, so I can somewhat understand where you're coming from. Although, no one can ever fully understand another person's grief). I loved the lines, "...the full moon of your soul..." and "...the gaping wound of his grave..." You paint a clear picture without saying too much which is a great skill indeed.
