i didn't
know
if he
really
knew
or
not

that
this was it.

his last room.

he seemed so happy.

he talked about things
as if they would go on
forever.

we reminisced
of
family
and
friends.

he joked with a nurse
passing in the hall.

he mentioned
the good food
and
how much they gave you.

the view from the window
was
brighter
than
the one from home.

i walked the room
talking of all the
nice things
around
and
about
him.

i stopped at his closet
and looked upon

one shirt
one pair of pants
one pair of shoes
and
a
wool sweater.

as i touched
the sweater he would
never wear

i looked at him.

he looked at me.

and
then
i knew

he knew.

As I read this passage
I felt life come and go
reality and truth flooded the scene
it was beautiful and heartbreaking
