Array ( [sid] => 161000 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Red Kite [time] => 2010-07-07 08:18:39 [hometext] => This is a red kite I saw recently in the Brecon Beacons, high up in the mountains of the national park. [bodytext] => Red Kite is a smile
Spreading slowly across my face.
Her freedom is a subtle domination
Of mind, body and soul.
Between the highness of Pen-Y-Fan
And the lake where I wait she emerges,
Her wings a delicate fusion of feather and sinew,
Are taut like the strings of a fine violin
And her great forked tail is wagging the sky
With perfection well honed.
From under the great outcrop of Pen Millan
She takes to her mountain kingdom,
Flinging clouds to far distant ridges
And with a flash of chestnut red she erupts
Over the sky like a newly active volcano.
With barely a beat of heart or wings
She hovers over high peaks and foot hills
That lay soft in summer slumber.
I see her clearly now, her grey head and piercing eyes
Reflected in the light of the lake,
Her frightening stare bouncing thoughts off my own reflection.
Then, in the rapid blink of eye, heartbeat,
She rises again, slicing clouds with lethal wings,
To the dreaming horizon where she turns on her side ,
Hanging there until, brought out of this moment by her cry,
My mind, body and soul high with her spirit,
The final trace of smile is stretched. Complete. I loved this poem! Your attention to detail is exquisite. Kites have a certain magical quality to them. You capture this well in your poem. Your use of imagery is amazing.
