Ueno Park, Tokyo Bay: Spring 2009
white and pink blossoms, dispersed;
the cherry trees pruned to amputation.
at the shrines, people purify
their hearts with water
and smoke ill winds.
the sunlight flickers
through groves of gingko,
saluting the quiet spectacle of
ordered paths.

Japanese schoolgirls
in pleated navy blue skirts;
white knee-high socks
bearing the Playboy bunny,
giggle behind cupped hands
as the park homeless sweep their
patch of dirt with frayed Edo-Boki
—still houseproud in their exclusion.

Children in sailor suits
and straw boaters, hold hands
in lines an architect would envy.
cooking smells linger on the air
while koi circle in lazy ponds.

birds sing, despite the strutting cats.

Lovely picture. . . (including the one you paint with words). I sure it must be a splendid destination. You are a lucky one. . . elle :)

Yes you give us a perfectly imaginable and almost tangible picture of just a normal day in tokyo here!!

I am amazed with your skill to to suck in the reader with acute and sharp descriptions that bring to life the everyday event into a poetic piece of pure class!!!

I am into the Japanese culture allot so this was even better because of that!!

oh and your last line was fantastic, i just imagined a sly cat walking up and down!!

great work!!
