The EMS people tend to build what looks like a callous shell where it appears that they are cold and take things in a manner that may often seem heartless and indifferent (hence off to fish stories). It is a unique mindset and really just a manner in which things are often faced in order to do a rather heart wrenching job at times. But trust that they really do have a sense of the pain and suffering. I wrote this because it struck me with the oddity one day in which we had to deal with such things - and this truly was such a sad and heart wrenching event.
I sincerely beleive that the more something affected us the more callouse we would seem but truly we were touched and wept inside for this poor little girl.

Fishers Fables
(After School Tragedy – A True Story)

Black rubber marks on pavement
Barbed wire ripped
The fence is down.
A roll-over
Screams
Multiplied by six.

Bodies…
One over there
Two over there
Another by the rock
Two more in the lavender tin can
Crumpled in the field.

Glass and weeds
Cuts with blood
Sirens,
More screams
Lights, red and blue…
Mostly red.

The one by the rock
Sixteen like the rest
This her celebration after school
Her helicopter ride
Whoop, whoop, whooshing
Slices through the air.

Rescuers talk…
First, war stories
About the mush within her chest
No heart, no lungs,
Just mush inside her chest
Then off to fisher’s fables. [comments] => 3 [counter] => 254 [topic] => 32 [informant] => wheels [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => SadPoetry )

This was a very interesting read, I'm finding myself remembering the slight encounter I had with ems just a few months ago, and it was nowhere near as serious a situation as described here. This poem made me thankful for that.

You've written an engaging piece here and it was a pleasure to read.

I had a friend who was a first responder...... on the scene and he had also told me some horrific stories.

I myself lived near an accident prone area and often times I was at the scene before the rest arrived to help until someone got there.......... this poem reminded me of a time when I saw someone take their last breath. Something I have never forgotten, that helpless feeling knowing this time there was nothing I could have done to help before the real help got there.

This is a heart wrenching write. You my friend have much strength and courage. I also know that these situations affected you your heart is not cold.

Hugs
Michelle
