Lonely Vagabond

No one knows you when you travel
The highway at night
Filling the time that others sleep together
Stopping at the roadside cafes
To find a friend in a warm cup of coffee.

I traveled much of my life
Alone I travel places
Searching others still more alluring
Running to them –hiding
Where it is safe
And loneliness is held upon the shelf
Taken in prescribed doses.

Longing is always there
Held nearly at bay
By time forgetting
What it is like
Not to be lonely.

Time stopped forgetting the other night
A moment... just…
When I saw you
Also alone in your own way
But I have taken too much of you
Overdosed and became dependant
Upon desires for you.

I feel I should move on
Run to my motorcycle
And be off down the distant highway
To the next place alluring
Hiding where it is safe.

…and I can drink to forget
It is easy
Eventually
But I know you will be found
Laying in the thoughts
Of each place I travel
And I would miss you
With an addiction
That cannot be sedated.

I relate to this so much. The wanderlust, the travel to get away, escape memories, ( never happens)
The road as fun as it is at times can also be lonely.
Beautiful write.
