[bodytext] => Sometimes It Takes Me Longer

Sometimes it takes me longer to learn things,
like tying my shoes,
or buttoning my buttons,
or even something considered easy,
like talking....
It's not because I don't work hard,
or that I don't do my best,
or don't try new things,
or that I'm dumb...
Actually,
I work very hard;
what other kids learn easily by doing common everyday things,
I have to bust my buns to do;
what other kids learn without even thinking,
I have to strain to concentrate;
things other kids accomplish and think nothing of,
are things I take pride in.

On the other hand,
sometimes I learn things faster than most other kids do;
I was putting pieces into puzzles way before I was two!
Even before that,
I was turning pages in books and magazines,
one at a time,
or just thumbing my way through!
And,
I dance better than anyone else!
I always have!

Like all kids
I've had some help;
early on people came to my house to help;
I've gotten a head start by going to a pre-school;
but mostly,
it's my mom...
she comes to me on my level;
she gets down on the floor with me,
plays with me,
talks with me,
and reads with me;
sometimes she reads with me,
and sometimes I read with her;
the secret is,
she does things with me.

Some people think a kid like me is a burden,
a drain on their precious energies,
and they kill them...
they think my parents have to spend too much time with me,
teaching me,
and showing me how to do things;
that money shouldn't be wasted on kids like me,
teaching me,
and showing me how to do things...
my dad disagrees...
he says that people who are ready to be parents
will want to spend all their spare time with their children...
he says that parents of kids that don't have learning difficulties
tend to take their kids for granted;
they use the idea of normalcy as a reason
not to spend a lot of time with their kids...
that really,
all kids have learning difficulties;
that it's tough for any kid to reach their full potential;
that sometimes,
a lot of times,
it's actually the parents who are the learning difficulties!
He says that if a parent isn't willing to spend all their spare time with their kids,
they're probably just not ready to have kids.
My dad says a child's life is incomprehensibly precious;
that to measure any child's worth with dollars and cents
is like using a ruler to measure how much Love is in a parent's heart...
he says kids aren't so much a responsibility
as they are a privilege...
my dad says a lot of things;
he's a teacher.

Then,
after he says all that,
he goes and says,
Of course Miss Gail,
your daddy comes way up short just like every other parent does...
the only Perfect Parent,
the only perfect father or mother
is the One who loaned you to me six years ago.

Whatever;
he's never treated me like I was a burden.
Never.

Yes,
it does take me longer to learn some things;
academic things;
physical things;
language kinds of things...
but,
things of the heart, the soul, and the spirit;
things like Gentleness,
Kindness,
Compassion,
Faith,
Hope,
and Love;
the things that really matter in this world,
and some say the next;
these I have learned with ease.

I find it hard to beleive you are a kid, (child).
I do know you're a great writer.
I'm jus tryin to figure out if you are writing thru the eyes of a child or you're speaking as
the child.
either way it's great writing and you have much compassion, understandingand strength.
huggs,
emy
Awesome work.

wonderful write. It just reminds me that when you think you have it bad someone always has it worse. However, I believe everyone is unique in their own way. God doesn't make mistakes!!!
