Tilling the Earth
Dark brown with twisted
webs of weeds and grasses
Once growing here
Now nourishing soil

This space has been void
of the usual garden fair
for years...
Summers now it has been
like a wildflower field

White picket fence
as it's perimeter
laden with grape vines
years old
Many a fine wine brewed from these
~~I remember the crock and the stirring
the stirring~~

She cried one day
Long ago when she came
back home
to the old farm place
Garden grown and not...
Not as she remembered
Her father, My mother
worked this ground with
their hands
their sweat
their love

Today the aroma of the dirt
is simply unexplainable
No other scent so perfect...
Except maybe fresh mowed grass~
We take our tools
Dig and mound
Tenderly taking plants
Roots and dirt marry
Come summer late
their bounty shall be reaped

As a family
we plant
we join one another
in the Earth's sweet song
Caress her
Love her
and she shall return
to us
health and vitality
brought with harvest

Now we wait
We water
We talk
We weed
We blend and grow all of us
together
garden
Earth
family
Through love and patience
we shall all be sustained

We planted a late garden yesterday. Damon used the tiller.
Joesie, Jude and I dug holes, made mounds and planted...tomatoes, squash, peppers and cucumbers.
We also have a whole row of asparagus that we're slowly weeding out.
It is probably been 6 years since there has been a garden here.
Donnell (my little sister and the "she" mentioned in the poem) will be happy and I can't wait to share fresh vegies with her. I sure loved this Laura,

I could smell the dirt, feel it in the fingernails, hear the tiller.

A special day at your house and I think that is wonderful!!!!

oh my .. geeze laura, you made me hungry with this ... I can taste
those fresh garden veggies already!!! :)

What a beautiful tradition .. tilling, planting, watering, weeding .. just
working the land together as a family and then reaping the fruits of
your labour to prepare and share together as well. How wonderful!!

Beautiful write, my hippy sis. Just beautiful. I would love to try some
of that wine mentioned in here ... lol

I love the pictures!
What a lovely way to spend time with your family, creating a beautiful garden to nurture and watch bloom together.
There is something very peaceful about working outside and creating a place of your own with the land.

Take care,
Dom
