Editor's note: I just wanted to say, in my 23 years as a nurse, I found myself very emotionally attached to my Patients. I loved my job, but then began to hate the bureaucracy part of it. I don't think I could ever work in the hospital or nursing home scene again. Let's remember all the wonderful nurses out there, it is one hell of a job.

I'd much rather be here
than there, man..

Walking darkened halls
of past death
Beds against the walls
Hollow my footfalls

Stench of one
once so proud
A human being
now unable to control
what once was

Stench
Call light on
"I'll clean you up, no worries"
(this could be my Mother....or me....or even you)
How do you want to be treated
when you're beyond your mind's
c a p a c i t y
Honor
Dignity?

Middle of the night
Mrs A. doesn't look so well
Pallid skin
sunken eyes
lips colored cyanotic
Heart monitor blinking...

blinking

for all of us to see
Lying in her bed...

all hooked up to
me.

Penned late 2005/or in 2006

Oh sis .. what a raw and amazing write! When my sister was in
the hospital during her final days, I always felt a little weird walking
the halls when some patients were in beds waiting to be moved
somewhere and even MORESO when I would walk into her
room, (before she was moved to isolation), with the other patients
lying there in their bedclothes. I felt like such an intruder.

Your compassion and strength is such a beautiful thing, sis.
I commend you and all those in the field that care for other human
beings. I'm sure it is a gruelling, arduous and oftimes sad job.

Nurses Day (here at least), is May 6th. So to you, and all those like
you, I say thank you. So very much. For all you do and have done.

love and prayers,
~MG

As a fellow nurse I commend you on this piece. So many can't write the emotion of the profession. It is just so gut wrenching and emotional to bring it to the surface. It distroys our hope of immortality so brutally. Excellent piece.
