I am jesus, I am, I am,
in the navy once too,
excuse me, got a smoke

No, get away! (passerby)

(Walking, limp & spits) horses petute,
petudie, duty, nudie...(sic)
my fathers naked noah
on a crutch,
his donkey's broken,
busted, dust.

(Stop, Sit)
Stinking
Ah but its like
nutmeg.
Ma, heres to you...
Top of the world,
top of toes, nose, shhh (eyes close):

(Store owner) Hey buddy wake up,
com'on, you can't sleep here,
(kicks) hey get up.
I got to open up...

(School girls late for class) eeuuu
Look, its soooo dirty,
Dis-gus-sting
Ehhh...(tongue receives finger)
Oh-My-god, it smells like pee...
Hurry...

(Waking)
Hey i'm jeez-usss
how you squeeze us,
pray, play with me...
Yo, gotta smoke...(finger curling)
Com'ere little gurrrls...

(Store owner)
Hey, you talk like that again
and I'll have you arrested...

(Stares hotly)
I'm in the bigger jail,
biggest jail... (twitch)
You open (almost lucid)
I need a drink,
just back from
a Bushmans breakfast...

(Store owner)
You got money...

(Staring, burning)
Yeah, here,
crumpled bills and
grimy coins...

(Store owner)
First you drink water,
then you can buy, OK, buddy.
You come by every day,
you stink...
Why don't you get cleaned up,
you sleep on the streets,
whats the matter with you?

(Laval eyes, lasers fire)
Eh, soap is so slutty,
I won the lotto
and
don't want to pay taxes.
I hate the government...
War and fat pigs...
They do what they want...
Everyones insects,
ya know,
its just how I see'em!

(Head shaking stops
Only the whites of his eyes show,
shining, waiting for agreement :>)

(Store Owner)
You know buddy
you're crazy
get some help.
Here's you're change.

We've chatted about this and you know how deeply I feel about this write. The harsh realities on how some view this horrendous plight. Each time I read this tears come to my eyes. I commend you for writing this excellent piece. We've got to keep bringing up the harshness, the sadness, the outrage of the homelessness so they can be heard.
Peace to you,
Laura

A tear is shed, why is it everybody walks on by and doesn't want to know the real person behind the homeless face. Sadly this is harsh reality. It absolutely breaks my heart. You have done an excellent job with this my dear friend. Thank you so much for shedding light on this matter.
much love,
sue m

ever cast your eyes down instead of looking into the eyes of a homeless person? I have. Tears welled up into my eyes
as I passed him..wanting to help, but at the same time afraid... it's soo bitter cold out tonight. 12 degrees..and not enough room in the shelters. People think they're better..
I've got news; no one is better. This is a very emotional piece. thanks.

I'm torn when it comes to commenting on this one. I really like the way you constructed it, infact, I really liked most everything about it...I guess, having been homeless myself & having seen how much greater a variety this subculture contains then just this man you've depicted & by the way, I've met him...it just makes me wonder in worry that a lot of people see the whole homeless community as this one man...not that this man doesn't exist, it's just that he's only one face of a vast number that also fall under the heading of, "homeless"...just sumptin' ta' think about...

Great job, sweetie!!!

I so agree with my mum, I really dug this poem but through my mum's experience I know of other situations. Also in my own knowledge acquired through close friends of mine who have had nowhere to go that it's not always like this. I have even known some who have left specifically to experience having no home...in a house that is. But nonetheless I believe this was a great depiction of one of the many facets of homelessness.

Now this is "real". What a write, yet with some sarcasm,as well as meaning. Had to re-read, as I wanted the entire, effect. But you are so true. Ppl need this sometime, to open the "eyes" and truly see. Yah!

To the homeless and to those who have homes and feel homeless still...the lack of belonging to and the judgement of seeing others as uselsess or dirty or empty...wake up world we are the reflection of your lack of compassion....that's what I think after reading..but that's my mind so I speak it. Thank you for making me think on it. When do we learn tolerance and acceptance?
