All the sights and sounds remind me of him
The sights of hunters seeking a deer in fields and in the woods
The sounds of guns shooting and killing a deer if they could
Many, oh so many, years ago -- that's what should have happened too!
But the bullet strayed and ricocheted and a shoulder it went through
Two brothers left early that morning before the sun came up
Only one brother returned -- I sure wished I had dreamt this up
If only, if only the bullet was stopped by the shoulder bone
But it missed the bone and continued on to make the heart its home
One of my roles was to calm my bro with a piano to play
My mother needed my help to go look for my drinking dad
He took a sedative then drove to a bar because he was sad
Between calming my brother and helping my mother, too,
I had to arrange the funeral without help or clue
This may not have been too hard at all for almost anyone
But before you say anything about being my duty one
Let's go over a few details not shared before this
My brother who died was fifteen and never been kissed
My brother still alive was twenty-two, married and a son of his own
I was only seventeen years old and in high school - far from being full grown
I did it because this life demanded it of me
But the strength I needed came from above - can't you see?
Yes, I still think about my brother that awful day long ago
And I wonder if things would now be different it it wasn't so. Hello. I really liked how you expressed yourself in your poem. Does writing about this make the pain lessen a little? Maybe I should try to do this. My bro killed himself 3 years ago and I'm still miserable. Just wanted to let you know that I know what you're going through. Take care.

Linda, a tragic story. Your brother is with you in spirit. I had a friend who now is in heaven, he taught our family how to hunt, to fish.. not for sport, but for survival. Although I did not go hunt the bear or deer, I had to have great faith in our family friend that my sons would be safe. I hear a story such as yours very often, and my heart feels like the bullet hit mine because I feel such grief for the family. For all hunters, please practice safety, hear Linda's words here. Thank you Linda for posting this story, I have faith it will help others not only to be safe in the woods, but also, to help them along with their lost loved ones as well. Raquel Leah
