But it's the simplistic kind of depth that's not on purpose
Where you hit the dirty pavement underneath with your eyes and decide, instead
To study the not-at-all pretty colours flickering over the surface.

The kind where I had to wonder why I stood there so long
Grocery bag handles cutting painfully into my skin
Yet I took the time, still staring, to distribute the weight
And tried desperately to look beneath the surface again.

I would have stood there all day, given the chance
But for the one driver who realized he could cut through
And sprayed the whole parking lot, it seemed, with that puddle
That separated and recollected in twice as many places new.

It was a simple thing, just another metaphor for ignorance
Something with which to say that humanity doesn't mark the deep end
However, the truth is that we notice danger more than anything
And so we live in the dark, with no real need to comprehend.
