Family and loved ones they must abandon behind
That singularly makes lt an extraordinarily difficult time
Plus entering into the danger of a battle zone
To function as a soldier is no simple task
A lot is required; regardless it never exceeds what they give back
A cause for freedom, for an extermination of brutality they fight
So that our freedom is preserved along with our rights
Bullets and bombs bring danger to soldier and civilian alike
A crimson tide of blood, suffering and sacrafice
But their commitment and dedication to duty is what makes them soldiers
Eating rations and conducting missions
Putting you life on the line everyday
Fallen comrades around you lay
Never again to see light of day
May they be permanently at peace and rest
As well trained as our soldiers are
They are just as human and vulnerable as the rest of us are
It is hard to be gone so long, so far
Home and family are an ache in the heart
Fostered buy the need to be so far apart
May we collectively show honor, respect and gratitude
For our soldiers, men and women alike
I'm sure they appreciate reading their mail
As it constitutes their life line to home

This is a great tribute to the men and women serving for the country. This was well written and emotive. We have a couple poets on here who are over fighting in Iraq, and they write of horror stories that break my heart when I read them. It isn't for the weak of mind, or heart, and I'm sure they'd appreciate this dedication to them. Well done.

It is nice to know that people appreciate the stuff soldiers go through for freedom and the love of their country. My father is retired air force and my husband is active army who just got back from afghanistan a couple months ago. Life is not easy for them over them over there or for their family members alike.

Hi willofree. I too enjoyed this work but feel that some claims are nonetheless a little misplaced. For example, the battle zone you speak about was not created by a deadly enemy as one might imagine, but by American and British politicians.
As to the quest to 'exterminate brutality' the army would be better off camping out outside the Whitehouse to achieve this task, because is is within those walls that the originator of much brutality in the contemporary world is to be found.
You also talk of the highly abstract concepts of freedom and rights. Well these abstract terms are not free floating as western politicians argue. They suggest that such ideas are divorced from the reality whence they arose, then the afore mentioned politician looks about the world to see which leader, country, region etc does not match the concept criteria, and woe betide those that do not. George Bush and others of similar mind simply embark on a quest to make reality fit their ideas, when in fact it should be vice versa.
As regards the issue that bullets and bombs bring danger to soldier and civillian alike. This sentence implies that both categories share the suffering during such campaigns when in fact the civillian casualties to date, brought about by American and British military aggression and subsequent occupation total around 29,000 by some estimates. In other words, the civillian population is really experiencing the wrath of George and Tony, especially the young. The flower of a nation is often the dimension to suffer in war.
As a thought for closing, if the US president can justify the aggressive political action of the US by making claims that God told him to invade Iraq, then we are in danger as a human species in my view. I mean , here is a guy who is in control of the greatest military arsenal on planet earth and not in the least afraid tio use it, despite the loss of life, and seeking to justify his actions in a wholly subjective manner. I mean how on earth does one test the claim that God told someone to do something or not ?

Terry ... I admire the way you drive right into a subject and lay it out. You are open and honest with your words and relay them as to how things you are experiencing affect you. That, kind sir, allows you to step into the minds of those who read your work. I think you did a good thing here ...
Colin ... you are wholly entitled to your views and there are, I'm certain a great many who share them. I feel though you may have missed the point. These men and women were called upon ... for what ever reason. That they answered the call ... perhaps even regardless of their beliefs ... is nothing short of amazing.
We just need them to know they have not been forgotten and friends, family, and communities are rallying for their safe swift return.

| This is a great write. I was a sailor 11 years back in "Dessert Storm" and I was lucky that my ship only saw 1 combat engaement. No one was killed. It is hard being away from home. You touch base on a lot here that the sodier faces, Thanks. |
