Hears the fading songs of birds
As the night begins to fall
Cicadas speak with sirens call
Takes a pen in calloused hand
Casts his eyes upon the land
Hopes to write, when he is done
A portrait of the setting sun

Trees, like soldiers standing guard
Shadows stretch across the yard
On the forest on the hill
Light is shining brightly still
To the west the painted sky
Colors clouds as they drift by
Quarter moon begins to show
As the pace of life turns slow

Final moments of the day
Sun drops low and slips away
Fireflies springing from the grass
Twilight now has come to pass
Stars awaken just in time
Take their place in nature's rhyme
God, how I adore this view
I wanted you to see it too

You have everything I want .. cicadas .. fireflies .. I've never seen either... and yet I try to write about them. I heard the cicada when I visited Rome ... but never saw one.. they were like you .. I always got to hear them.. then they vanished LOL... hopefully one day I'll go to some part of the country where I can see a firefly .. I so long to see one. Thanks for this beauty .. brilliant, beautiful as always .. and I'm proud to know you.

Beautiful work, Larry. The imagery is absolutely outstanding. Both cicadas and fireflies are well know around my part of the world. My grandchildren still get to chase the fireflies as I did when a child. The cicadas drone us to sleep at night. Wonderful view you have there.

An accomplished write - your Thought Fox, perhaps, drawn out of day's somnolence by the beautiful succour of nature.

An achingly sweet homage, Larry. Thank you for casting the image across the ether.

No simple man can paint such lovely words. It takes a master who knows a word pallet and can choose the right scheme, brush and blend technique to truly (not only see) but paint a poem with glorious words.

Of course you got my attention with the cicadas---because if my memory serves me correctly they live all of their lives underground and come out to play their mating songs and then their life cycle is completed. I always found that fascinating.

And then this..

"Trees, like soldiers standing guard"

Oh who could have said that better? Huh? Wowsers..

And..

It is like firefly's springing from the grass and the child in me remembers chasing them, the dewy/cold feel on a humid night. There is magic associated with fireflies. And a bit of it, was magically placed within this poem.

Your poetry is astounding and some of the very best i've ever read.

And, I am NOT biased.

Well done, again.

Kie :)

"I wanted you to see it too"
and because of your brilliance in painting a picture with words
I did. How wonderful you write, Larry. I love the way this poem
just trickles off the tongue. Simple beauty and beautifully simple.
This is one to treasure for sure!
