Best be mindful what you're told, lest you bring IT back again
And IT waits within the darkness for the tale's one thousandth tell
To free IT from its prison and unleash one night of hell

Haloed by sharp thorns and cloaked in deeper shades of black
A whispered lullaby, they say the chimes of bones sing back
Naught a single tale is uttered with a mention of ITs face
Child, say a prayer that you not wake within ITs cold embrace

A mother tells her daughter she had best return to bed
Or the demon of the night will claw ITs way into her head
A father tells his son to feed the flock before suns sets
Waiting spirits punish all unreconciled debts

And all throughout the Children’s tribes the tale is repeated
Until the thousandth time, and the circle is completed
An older child taunts a younger member of the clan
Recalling fables told to him and starts it all again

Meridious has waited, baited by a chance of life
He breaks his chains to seek his prey and live within this night

* A while ago, I forget how long, Arden and I started a co-write. *
* We were unable to finish beyond this point. We put it to bed. *
* There were scheduling difficulties, and other projects that were calling us. *
* But the words would not leave me alone. There was just so much more there. *
* So, on the anniversary of my joining YPDC, I posted my first short story/stories. *
* I owe many thanks to many people for their help with making my words readable. *
* But perhaps the greatest thanks of all to Arden, for naming a demon that would not die. *

Thank you all ... for everything this site has brought out of me over the last year,
much of which I didn't even realize was there. You are a fabulous group of poets.
I am overjoyed to be included within your family.

This is great, Scott. It reminds me so of the 'Cucuie' (i think it transfers to nightmare or monster, not sure) my grandsons Spainard grandmother told them about to keep them in bed. When they were with me we always had to look under the bed and in the closets for the monster. I told them to be on the safe side it would be best to keep their feet in bed and covered up. It worked for a while. This is a great piece of work. One never knows what spirits are roaming around in the night.

A poem that bubbles with something mysterious... It flows so well too. Christopher.

Nicely done! I like the folk-epic feel to this, the hint of archaism. And the idea behind it is a good one. I'm on to read those stories, soon.

Just stumbled upon this, and it seems (and is) truly lovely.
The way the words seem to just flow, and yes, I completely agree with an above post .. "bubbling with the mysterious".
Compelling and thought-provoking write -

Keep it up!

Naz The tales told to children are indeed violent and yes scary. I still remember a few from my early childhood. You have put into words that which many carry around with them all of their lives. How many scars are left with such people. Great write I am pleased that I went back over the list or I would have missed this. Greetings from Bernard2

This was astoundingly gorgeous. The rhythm and rhyme were perfect of course, the description was incredible, and the story was creepy yet beautiful.
I absolutely adored it.

Hmm good write Naz I liked how it started
and just drew the reader into the poem. I
originally thought the poem was a bit weak
when you kept on mentioning "It", but then
you gave "It" a name which made the poem a
whole lot stronger in my opinion. Yeah great
write and I loved the story within the poem.

Oh so that's it Naz, thank you for filling me in. Really this is what I do when I read a good story anyway. I usually start at the end and if it's not too sad, then I start at the beginning again!*smiles* The whole story makes sense to me now, but it did before also. You have a wonder knack for story telling Naz, I hope you will continue with this one and many more!
And by the way, we are delighted to have you here with us too!
Warm love
consue

Hi Naz,

Looks like another demension to your wide range of talent. In reading this short storie/poem the thought that occurred to me was the saying, "Let sleeping dogs liel....."
The story seems to depict a process by which children are indoctrinated into the world of demons?

Well done Nazzy/Scott

Will/Terry

Your writes so often have the feel that they just flow out of you, and those are the kind I like best!
This has ardens dark feel to it, yet it has your sense of strangeness and flavor of originality!!

Thanks for showing me this one nazzy. It makes more sense
when you've read the series in the stories section. Exceptional.
Honestly man, I wish I had half your talent and a fifth of your
imagination.

Feel the essence of the great and powerful naz. lol I feel
inspiration coming on as we speak....
