her confidante
the only one she told
who she counted on to listen
and she knew
would never scold

Who would never
tell another,
or even tell a lie
who heard her loudest laugh
and felt
her longest cry

her playmate
when she was
just a pretty, little girl
he comfort
when she was
all alone in the world

Through heartaches
and hard times
through thick and thin
everyday of every year he'd be there
lose or win

From brand new
with glossy eyes
to dirty and worn
to long after
his soft, fur coat
was raggedy and torn

her teddy bear was there for her
he helped her
through it all
he was the only one with whom
she let down
every wall

And if his glossy eyes
could have seen her
through the years
or if perhaps
the words had ever
made it to his ears

He would know the little girl
who grew up
before his eyes
He would see
the self-inflicted pain
he would hear the cries

He'd know every scar by heart
both external
and within
He'd know the names
of all who hurt her,
every place she'd been

He could have sensed
the sadness in her eyes
and in her heart
And he would have sensed it
everyday,
every moment from the start

but everyone knows
that teddy bears
can't really hear or see
And I know that
better than anyone
because that girl was me

So my cries for help
fell on deaf ears,
my pain was wasted on the blind
and now I don't even have
a teddy bear
