And I gazed into your eyes
They did not seem to focus,
Even though I knew you tried.

I knew you were beholding,
All the wonders of your world.
And the world became so special,
Because of my baby girl.

Your feet and hands were tiny,
Yet perfect in every way.
But even then I often wondered,
Just how someday I could say--

“Her mother and I ,” to another man,
When the preacher calls out loud.
“Who gives this hand in marriage?”
As my tears roll like rainclouds.

The tears will be such happy ones,
And sad ones mixed together.
If I could say when you could leave,
I would probably answer ” Never!”

As that day looms ever closer,
For the years too quickly flee,
That beautiful angel in the crib,
Is still so real to me.

But so now is this woman!
It’s hard to accept , it’s true.
For as you were given to us,
Now we must give up you.

May your children bring you great joy,
As you’ve brought to mom and me.
And may your husband cherish the gem,
That we give to him , of Thee!

This poem I wrote some years ago,
Right before your wedding day.
And I love you even more now,
Than when you first came home to stay.
