in the still silence
of my darkened window

waiting for the sound
of foot steps falling
on dry autumn leaves

listening...

shifting nervously
as the hours slowly drip
from the pendulum

trickling down
to pool
around my feet.

No sound

No shadow

dancing across
the untrimmed grass

to whisper a hint
at who follows behind.

Only a silence
so deep
it seems unbroken
by the call
of a distant owl.

The two seem two meld
into one
lonesome anthem

resounding

through the smallest
fibers of my body.

No foot steps

No crushing leaves
