Across the carpet to my toes.

I closed the book and went to bed.

She lay murdered on the floor;
I hid behind the parlor door.
I dared not move; I held my breath;
Praying that the killer left.

He helped himself and mixed a drink;
Lit a cigar and sat to think.
The old clock chimed, the blood it flowed;
Across the carpet to my toes.

I gasped for breath; He turned his head;
I closed the book and went to bed.
