they clamour pouring, roaring
'round my fleshly cage;
my brain the Globe, the grandest stage,
thespians to vent their rage.

Bent on finding peace
I inventoried vices past.
Summons made,
obeyed and duly ranked,
now before me on parade.
Weed no more, up in smoke,
pills flushed to toilets hungry roar,
the death of hard drugs long since dead;
Is there nothing, nothing more?

Panic spread.

“But how!” I cried am I to quell this storm,
having planked my rudders one by one;
but at line's end stood wobbly, timid, weak,
my first friend booze;
I bid it speak.

“Master, please, let me help,
I can soothe you for a time.
Remember all the laughter shared,
You loved me then...I thought you cared.
But here, now, fellow, regard my state,
suffering since you banished me,
but pick me up, I'm feather light, we-”

“Silence!” shouted I and silence fell.
“Get thee gone and leave me to my hell.
Thirty years I gave you sway,
granting license to take so much away.
No more of you, I command!
I'll chance Hades roil
to your foul and greased demands.”

Upon my words this demon; oldest, last,
with hatred at me telling all- defeated, gone,
I felt joy swim,
stroking cell to cell to all within.
Firm of mind serenity upon me crept,
vexations soothed, storms no more,
sober still, and happy now,
untroubled, free, I deeply slept.
