This is unbelievable but a true story.
It happened to me late one night.
I was on patrol doing my sworn duty,
When these events started coming to life.

In my headlights I saw a woman walking,
Through the fog and wearing a white dress.
It was very soon just after midnight,
She’d had a breakdown was my first guess.

I drove up then along and beside her,
Then asked her how that I might help.
She turned her face and glared right at me,
With eyes bright red she gave a haunting yelp!

I felt my neck hairs standing upright.
Right then I braked and simply backed away,
Keeping her in my view all the whole while,
Thinking what to my dispatcher will I say?

I had my sergeant rendezvous with me,
As the woman walked the sidewalk to the church.
It was not used but a historical landmark.
And sat surrounded by some oak and birch!

We watched her walk right in through the front door.
Stopping not for the padlock or the chains.
Through the windows we saw a spiral staircase,
As she ascended those steps we felt insane!

The staircase had only been for show since,
The upper floor had long ago collapsed.
Both of us had heard similar stories,
Over the years had thought that they all were crap!

Our flashlights breaking all the darkness
Inside the church on this foggy night.
Not an inch of space that wasn’t lit up,
The lady had disappeared from sight!
