I struggle to find the words, the adequate expression.
Like most people we observe by way of media the poverty,
The pain and surely, if there is a God, the shame
Of the starving, the helpless, the abused, the human detritus
Of regimes that exist in luxury and let their own people die.
Smiling politicians shake hands and make insincere platitudes
Whilst thousands of people scrabble through excrement and filth,
Trying to recoup something that their families can utilise.
What on earth will make us realise that power has a duty,
And that is to the people they are sworn and supposed to protect.
It is not just the Third World it is here in our supposed enlightened society.
Hundreds live on the streets and their pain reflects our shame.
Let us all come together and not forget the simple fact,
That tomorrow anyone of us in this economic climate could be there.
