Closing the Door on Love Cynthia Edgerly© 2005

Two souls embraced a wider world,
when our lives became entwined
so many, heady days of love
with kisses strong as wine
when we cast away that Eros veil
for friendship’s cloth instead,
we’d keep our hearts at distance
till we’d end up in your bed
mistakes were made, we didn’t care
our relationship was set
most times we would remember,
sometimes we would forget.

Until that fateful argument,
when you ran into the rain
my pleas for you to stop and turn
were shouted out in vain
so many days and nights I
thought you’d reconnect in time,
all the demons that were yours
had suddenly become mine
then it came to let you go
the distance formed and set
sometimes I did remember you,
and sometimes I did forget.

Now you make this overture,
the prodigal friend returns
but too late to open healed wounds
on which my world now turns
you still hold fast to your choice
your right to up and leave
all our history mattered none
that’s what I had to grieve
I feel a terrible sadness too,
a trailing of regret
sometimes I will remember you,
and sometimes, I will forget.
