Ballade
A poem consisting commonly of 3
stanzas having an identical
rhyming scheme, followed by an
envoy. The same last line is used for each of the stanzas and envoy.
The most common ballade consists of 3 eight-line stanzas, followed by a 4-line envoy, with a rhyme scheme of ababcbcb and a final envoy of bcbc. All of the stanzas have the same final line, which acts as a refrain.
A variation is 3 stanzas rhyming ahabbcbc and an envoy rhyming bcbc. All of the stanzas have the same final line, which acts as a refrain.
