She terrifies me. Most often, she remains completely oblivious to the fact that she has done so. I attempt to keep it hidden. I do not want her to know that she has such power. Not yet anyway, and certainly not over me. She can stop my heart in an instant, with just a word. I catch my breath each time I hear her say my name. She has changed my life, for the better I am certain. Yet still, she terrifies me.

Loving her has been a learning experience. I do not mean that in a bad way. Every day she offers me something new for with which to cherish her. I was never a particularly gifted student, but I look forward to a lifetime of her lessons. I will try, but I know I do not stand a chance to learn them all, and still… she terrifies me.

She does not mean to instill such fear, this I know. There is not a malignant bone within her body. The terrors instilled by her are unintentional, though they are no less real despite that fact. I do not believe she could do anything to alleviate them, even if she knew how, or was willing to make an attempt.

She terrifies me, even now, as she calls out to me and I rush to her. I find her waiting atop a precipice, looking down. She is beckoning to courage. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, then looks at me and smiles one last time before she spreads her arms wide and pushes off.

“I can fly,” she cries, and I fear for her.

Because even as she goes rolling slowly by, on her brand new bike, I know the day will too soon arrive… that she will beg me...

to remove the training wheels.

I had an idea that it was going towards your daughter...lol Due the the notes we've traded lately. It was a wonderful short story. I did not know there was a story section on your-poetry.com. Yeah I really pay attention, huh. :)

Good Story,

An absolutely precious and heart warming write.
I was thinking how intense and deeply this love was for.....probably your women.
Then to awaken to the training wheels of your daughters.....bicycle...how of course true is this love.Well done Naz.

Ah, the sheer power and merciless beauty of a child...

They are, as you say, pure in their intentions, and know not of their periless hold on our hearts... A mere hiccup of laughter, shining and perfect, can completely destroy the titanium walls of the most chaste... A crooked smile of adoration will send every dark cloud of sorrow eons away, leaving effervescent joy the taste of sweet candy.. And so quickly, that very same child will grow up, shed his/her prepubescent skin and spread their weak wings, ready to fly. They will leave, and go about their lives, chasing dreams and crashing along the way, but ever hopeful to get a taste of heaven..

I love this. You brought out the 'mother' in me, and made me realize just how precious children can be, especially your own. Your daughters are so very lucky to have a father like you, Scott. And although one has flewn away, another still remains.. Cherish her; cherish both of them. You have such a gift, and have been blessed with two beautiful angels... I can't thank you enough for sharing this with us. I'm so happy you're still writing, cheri. Hope to see more. Much love and happy penning. I've been away for too long... *hugs* Au revoir pour maitenant.

Always,

Your little flower,

~S.

That's cool to to write about you daughter. I don't have a kid but I am sure they'd be the best inspiration anybody could ever have to do almost anything. I always hear that - people being terrified by their children's childhood and how transitory it really is in the end.
