I have a friend who does intend to read the universe!
Upon his shelf sits life itself, disguised in books of verse.
In his mind he redefines the blocks from which were built.
To find mankind reminds him of a ragged, patchwork quilt.

And every patch, each key and latch, to understand the whole;
He took apart, to seek the heart, and found instead his soul.

Mankind is exactly that..a patchwork quilt. It is a
conglomeration of many miss-matched pieces that
if you take any away it will not work. And once we
start trying to see and figure out others is when we
find our true selves. Another brilliant piece my
friend.

Wow this was great!
You spun words so masterfully in this write it amazed me and I have a feeling you didn/'/t even try. Feels like it just flew onto the paper.
The last stanza was brilliant.

Some feller, this friend of yours! Sounds like he needs to pop a Zannax and chill. That really would be something, if after all that agonizing (for what else could it be?), to find the answer is as simple as having a soul. You are purtty durn smart, so you just might be correct.

Poetically, I agree with other posters...a mini-masterpiece here.
