Ten Minutes Blind

Terror as I’ve never known,
though thought of pondered long and hard,
to live as one with sight of none,
shattered in the land of dark.
Visiting this land an imperative to me,
on the loo, alone and black,
blindness all I thought it be,
to live with fingers touch to see.
Ten short minutes in that hell,
where shapes dance in darker realms,
every task we sighted, never quell,
stumbling blind as horror swells.
From loo to front of house,
a thing so simple as a drink,
a giant task to fill a glass,
then I opened eyes, a cheating thing.
I have another test to pass,
deafness comes, I welcome it.
I need to feel the silent life,
to taste the courage of the blind, the deaf.

Two things that we take for granted those of us that
have both sight and hearing. I have a great aunt that
is 93 and has been blind now for over 60 yrs if my
memory serves me right. I seriously could not fathom
the thought of not being able to see or hear. So many
things we would miss from one spectrum or the other.
Great piece! Youve definitely got me thinking.
Thank you for sharing,

This was brilliantly written but makes me nervous.
I had a freak accident today. Resulting in a eye injury and I put off going to the doctor today. As you eloquently wrote to be blind is no joy and I hope we never have to deal with it.
Very observant to note that when blindfolded we all cheat. It just ain/'/t the same as being really blind. So I know you did your homework on this. Very insightfully written.
Bravissimo!

there are dreams
fields of change in
an instant
sudden change
like storm cloud
dramatic meteor
showers impossible
to describe
apparent to the naked
eye in the night
sky far away
in distant deserts
where no one lives
because there is nothing
that supports life
deaf, the dog I grew
up with was the smartest
dog I ever did know
deaf, the friends I knew
growing up deaf
who were as they
say, gifted
blind,
And without seeing,
a blankness,
my sister went to
a high school concert
where this kid sang and played
harmonica,
his name,
Stevie Wonder
Peace! |

TO TASTE THE COURAGE OF THE BLIND, THE DEAF as you say, escorts us through the emotional reaction to self inflicted sensory deprivation.
Sometimes we learn more when we have less.
We will all lose our gifts. Let us not take them for granted.
We are so isolated and dependent, it is uncanny that we do not recognize it.
What would your family do if you unplugged the wi fi, and locked everyones cellphones in a drawer for the week-end?

I like your choice of words here, they add that " poetic" touch to your work. Nice mindset you posses.
Well done
Barkeep! A drink for my friend.

I/'/m wondering how // that Saturday// worked out.
I believe if you actually became blind you/'/d fine the courage to persist. After all, you/'/d have to.
Sometimes when I get off work and walk out to my car, I/'/ll see how long I can walk with my eyes closed. I can never make it too long and even then I/'/ll start walking in a slightly wrong direction when my eyes were closed.
You really expressed that fear, that hell of losing your sight. Always the master, you are. |
