A childish push of lips together, no use of grown up tongue,
We were but infants growing in England where summer long,
Parents left us to run and play without fear and to sing our song.
I loved you then.

That feeling of friend always as we held hands and we walked,
Sometimes silence but often of hopes and dreams we talked,
The sun shone down and bleached brown our dirt stained skin,
But the greatest warmth came from your smile to my heart within.
I loved you then.

As with all naïve thoughts from tender age we saw no end at all,
Every day an adventure shared, a different plot but me the hero tall,
Saving you each time, that beautiful lady, the encastled blonde,
Sweeping you into my arms to safety forever where you belonged.
I loved you then.

We grow older, if not wiser, and summers go as if they were never,
If you take all I’ve learnt, all I’ve taken in, although not so clever,
I’d still recall those days gone by as if the moment were right here,
And in doing so each golden moment would be reflected in a tear.
I loved you then, I love you now.
