Patriotism -
Calls to them
young men
young women

They leave behind
the creature comforts

To lay their heads
on distant shores

For in the name
of
Freedom

They fight
They kill
or
Are killed

Always thinking
of home

Always remembering
the men
the women

Who have walked
distant shores before

And emptied
their own hearts
Upon foreign lands

Who in turn
Remembered others

Times continues
the solemn march

While we at home
tie yellow ribbons
Choose politicians
Have barbeques

Sometimes,
with the thought
Of the real meaning
of the holiday

Buzzing
about
our
mind

Like a pesky fly
'It's a holiday-
have fun!'

These thoughts we
think

As we mentally
swat
the memories
That have brought us
to this day

While
young men
and young women

Lay their heads
on distant shores.

They are all heroes in my eyes. Everyone of them. Fighting a ridiculous useless was in the name of terrorism when all that is involved is power and greed for oil. You don't see the children of the politicians going to battle over there. Excellent write.

What a thoughtful and deep write....I enjoyed this. We have a poet on this site that's fighting in the war right now, and I'm sure he'll be pleased to read this....
