Un-wasted Determination

In a world of slacking, Nintendo and McDonalds,
It’s easy for a kid to get sidetracked.
It’s easy for a kid to get behind in school,
When their moms don’t care enough to show that they do care.

Around this age, kids are smarter in strategy than they are in school.
What way do you go to get to the finish line the fastest?
What job do you take to get the best car?
What super villain should you kill first?

They can tell you more about what type of car they’re looking at
Than what kind of book their reading.
If they got a C on their mid term report card,
“Good job, kid.” Their mom might say.

But if I got a C on my report card,
My mom was smarter than that.
She didn’t care if you knew what kind of bumper
That mustang had,
Or if Mario should destroy Koopa before or after he got 99 lives.

All she cared about was intelligence and doing your best.
If you had time to learn what kind of engine that foreign car had,
Then you had time to know your math formulas,
Your grammar,
And your elements table.

My mom and an un-wasted determination of hardship,
To make sure that her daughters,
Were well educated in a world full of
Nintendo, war, McDonalds and teenage pregnancy.

My mom would harden her words to make sure
Her words got across to you.
She would talk on and on about the importance,
Of good grades,
Good attendance,
And good performance.

Middle school and the beginning of High School
Was hard.
I couldn’t comprehend the math,
I couldn’t get used to the new atmosphere.
She bit down on me,
She chewed me out,
And made me try.

My mom had the un-wasted determination,
To make you want to prove to her that
You could do it,
That you
Would do it,
That you
Did do it.

That was my mom,
My guardian angel,
That was always they’re watching me,
Making sure I grew up straight.
Because of her,
I know how to read,
I know how to succeed,
And I know how to do a good deed.

Because my mom,
And her
Un-wasted determination,
Made me become a
Responsible,
Respectable,
Intelligent,
Young,
Woman. [comments] => 1 [counter] => 167 [topic] => 23 [informant] => NeuroticCoffeePot [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => FamilyPoems )
