Into my nostrils tonight, I think of you.
And when a long, grey haired busker
Plays a cover version of the Beatles ‘Blackbird’
On a worn and cracked Electro-Acoustic in the rain,
I think of you also.

And when I think of you in this way, I think of us together.
Of skimming stones on Brighton beach.
Of steaming hot chinese takeaways,
Shovelled into mouths hungry and waiting,
In the ethereal, smoky glow of a budget kung-fu film.
Of dreams we had.
Of stories we’d tell eachother.
Of stories we’d tell to others.
Of sitting on the phone to you last Christmas,
Half of us in Yorkshire and the other in Streatham,
Swearing that next year we would spend the day together,
And how that can never happen now.

And when I think of you in this way, it hurts.
It hurts to think that we will never be together on Christmas,
Or any other date.
It hurts to think of the way our dreams can dissolve like sugar in tea,
And how our lives are wasted and stubbed out
Like half smoked cigarettes.

Maybe next year I’ll spend Christmas with someone who loves me.
Maybe I’ll love them too.
Maybe even as much as I loved you.
But they won’t be you.
They’ll never be you.
And in a sense, I’ll never be me, because truly when you left,
You took me with you.

And at night, when I close my eyes,
I can feel the cool breeze,
As your wings beat and you take off,
And my stomach churns as I feel the wind on my face
And I call out
And I tear at your feathers and hair,
But you always leave.
Always.
And I always wait for you.
Always.
And I will continue to wait for you until you return.
Always.

Or else I will simply sit and wait it out,
For we will meet again one day
No matter what.

Its always nice to read a poem that you can actually relate to. Its great to see someone writting about their feelings in an honest way, especially around these festive times, when most people bottle up their inner thoughts. Excellent writting, please keep it up. (bloody hell... I sound like my old english tutor!)

'And in a sense, I’ll never be me, because truly when you left,

when i read that bit i intuitively recognised the emotions the words invoke.. then i got scared as i realised that an ex-girlfriend of mine is walking around now with the part of me she took but eternally rejecting it, torn from me forever and rejected by her :/ then i decided not to think so much and just sighed and thought happy thoughts :)
its a great poem, totally unpretentious and honest
keep at it
love jonny x

thats the saddest thing ive read in years..i think we can all relate to that. and if not, then surely we can at least want to be part of something that special. thank you for bringing a tear to a very unemotional person's eye :-*(

ah. bloody hell, Max! you're good!

but...

when you said you'd written some poetry to be honest i was expecting something like your early lyrics. you're a lot more mature. that was really beautiful. i know this sounds pathetic but i really want you to do well- i always had confidence in you. good luck

wow... that has had me nearly in tears. I know how you feel.

Love is different every time i guess - i have only felt it once, and didnt want to feel it with another person because it would be different.
