Array ( [sid] => 89560 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Raggedy Man [time] => 2005-04-01 07:13:37 [hometext] => Raggedy men, even with all their faults . . . can tug at your heart as they try, and (more often than not) fail in their attempts to overcome their addictions. In them, but for the grace of God, go some of us. [bodytext] =>

He was only a drunk
in an anywhere town.
Who had been to the top
then slid all the way down.

He crawled into a bottle
to escape his own hell,
but, the bars where he drank
became the bars on his cell.

In his long fall from heaven
each inch took it’s toll.
Till at last…on the bottom,
he had only his soul.

He was the life of the party,
but he kept falling down.
Now, he’s only a drunk
in an anywhere town.

Oh yes, they sure can tug on your heart. Struggling to overcome the addiction, after having gone through a sort of private hell before crawling into the bottle surely touches the heart strings.
Perhaps the struggle itself will be seen as meritorious before God, I trust.
The poignancy of the poem captured within a couple of stanzas hits.profoundly.

Pithy, poignant.- Tragedy.
Masterly done .

Maybe it's just that I found this the morning after a long conversation - a rather potent one - about 'souls' and such... but I couldn't help thinking... at least he had that. Raggedy then... but not hopeless, I'd say.

This one does tug at me... it's heartbreaking. Well crafted, John... the way you chose to present this does, I think, convey what it is your were wanting to express.

Keep writing,
~SNM~

This is a sad, but well thought out write, and I hope you win the battle...(I can relate)
Good Luck. Scorp.
